How I Overcame Depression – My Story! 

If you have suffered from depression or know somebody that has, then you will know only too well the devastating and life changing effect it can have on a person. It’s debilitating effect can make everyday life an impossibility and living hell…….this scenario was my life for the best part of 20 years.

Before I go on, I genuinely, hand on heart, have to thank the author of Destroy Depression, James Gordon. Not only did he open my eyes to what’s possible, but proved his biggest doubter wrong.

So, back to me…..ah yes, bullied from my early teens for my appearance and the fact I came from a poor background. My parents may have been poor but we were a happy family and I was always fed, watered and clothed but that didn’t stop the teasing which quickly went from verbal abuse to physical.

Soon after, the anxiety and depression set in which simply escalated as the years went by. I hid everything from everybody. It all started in early middle school and I wasted my teens and half of my 20’s before I finally opened up to my best friend. I broke down, told her the whole story. She had no idea. Of course she didn’t, people who suffer from depression are bloody good actors let me tell you. After many tears, we both cried, women are very hormonal after all, we agreed I should seek some help. It was a massive relief finally telling somebody how I was feeling.

What followed was medication / antidepressants which gave me terrible side effects. How did they treat the side effects? Yip, more pills. After awhile it was clear the meds were having no effect on me (apart from the nasty side effects) so I was changed to different meds…..this continued for years with no positive results.

During this time I also started visiting a therapist. I quickly became annoyed with his approach so switched to a different therapist but his approach was the same. I always felt like they were simply referring to a text book for answers to my problems, a bit like the way they learned when at college or university or wherever you get your degree in this stuff. Basically, I felt like they didn’t have a clue.

I stumbled around going through the same therapy each week, wondering where I was going when I came across a post on a forum by a guy called James Gordon. He said a few things which struck a chord with me, things I related to. I pm’ed him, we got chatting and he told me his past story and how he was about to release a book on how he had managed to overcome his depression. He bounced a few thoughts of me and ended up giving me a rough draft copy of the book…..I still cherish it to this day.

I have never been happier than what I currently am…..sure, I still get the odd day when my old foe depression tries to rear its ugly head, but thanks to this book, I have the tools and thought processes to beat it back down. I feel fully under control the second any anxious or depressive thought enters my mind.

Very well written, quick to the point, easy to understand and if you can’t relate to everything that is outlined in the book then I suggest you go back to your GP and get a second opinion on your depression diagnosis.

Although there is a plan of attack as I called it, James does actually encourage you to tweak the system to suit your needs and goals….become you own life coach as he calls it.

It really is a brilliant piece of authorship and it opened my eyes to the way I view certain issues and thought that I would encounter every day.

  • CBT Workbook and Tools (An intro into Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)

Now this little gem is designed to get you to understand how your brain works, how and why you are interperating certain events and what you can do to challenge those nasty negative thoughts. I strongly believe that this process is the key to the whole system and this alone could help many people cure or at least manage their depression alone. You also get printable charts which are avery useful and handy addition.

  • The Depression-Free Mediterranean Diet Book

This is basically a diet plan but don’t be fooled by how important this aspect of your life is in relation to your depression. My diet and general lifestyle was horrific. I’m talking fast foods, processed garbage, smoking, drinking, you name it, I downed it. Switching to this diet plan was a real shock to the system, in a good way of course.

  • Goal Setting Workshop

This is an essential part of the course. Its all about, well, setting goals, no matter how small they are, set them then go about achieving them. I lost days at work, hell, I even lost jobs because I couldn’t even get out of my bed because of my depression. With the goal setting workshop, its all about setting goals and how you can go about achieving those goals. You will surprise yourself once you start with this.

Now I know it seems like I’m waxing lyrical about the Destroy Depression system and that’s because I am haha but now lets take a look at some of the negative points….if anybody ever says a product does not have any negative points, they are a bloody liar……..so, on with the cons.

  • This will not work for everyone. It has the potential to, but it won’t if your mindset is wrong. For example, 3 people I have recommended the product too, only 2 had success, why? They both wanted it, they both put the effort in over a prolonged period of time and could see how it was going to benefit them. The person it didn’t work for entered into it with a defeatist mindset and was happy trudging along on his medication, hating himself in the process. If you are lazy etc then this is not for you. You must want, no you must feel the NEED to help yourself get better otherwise this system will be utterly useless to you.

 

  • The biggest gripe I have about the product is with the diet book. Yes it opened up my eyes diet wise, what I shouldn’t be eating and what I should be eating etc but there was no meal chart, diet plan, recipe’s etc. Maybe I’m been a tad picky here after all, it does tell you the types of foods to eat and how hard is it to google a damn recipe? Still, it would have been nice if that was all included…….Lazy James!!!

 

  • That’s about it for the negatives, seriously, that’s all folks.

I’m not going to list all the positives because I could go on and on all day and this post has already gone on waaaaaay longer than this ditsy brunette had intended….I swear I should have been blonde.

So to recap. If you’re anything like me and have been suffering anxiety, depression, PTSD or any other mental illness and your meds aren’t working and you want to get off them or even if they are working, give James and his Destroy Depression a shot.

Like I said at the beginning, I feel like I almost owe James my life. Although I never had suicidal thoughts, I never really had a life until I bumped into James on that forum.

I’m now much more outgoing, active and positive about everything in life itself. I also volunteer with a few charities……if somebody told me I would be doing that a year ago I would have laughed…..actually I probably wouldn’t, I never did laugh much until recently.
